PROCESS: Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Reklaim operate?
Our existing facility is located at the Port of Morrow in Boardman, Oregon. The plant is fully permitted and became operational in 2008, and also serves as our primary technology research and development center. We are completing process and products testing now, and plan to start-up continuous operations in 2010.
Where do you get your scrap tires?
Actually, our plant sites never store scrap tires. We obtain our feedstock from businesses that mechanically reduce scrap tires into shreds, then into small-sized crumb rubber. These businesses obtain scrap tires from tire aggregators-businesses that collect scrap tires from tire retailers.
Does the Reklaim facility meet environmental and safety standards?
Yes. We have spent a number of years developing our closed loop process and designing facilities that are good for the environment and safe for people. Our Boardman, Oregon facility has undergone a rigorous regulatory review, and we fully comply with and have received all necessary permits from the State of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Port of Morrow and City of Boardman.
Additionally, in May, 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Reklaim's carbon black and oil technology and products for commercialization in the U.S. under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). We believe Reklaim is the first and only company to gain these approvals to date. As such, only Reklaim has the necessary regulatory approvals to legally sell carbon black recovered from scrap tires using a pyrolysis process. Importantly, Reklaim's EPA approval is expressly limited to its patent-pending technology and its specific products.
Any potential competitor using a different pyrolysis technology would have to go through the same rigorous and time-consuming process that Reklaim has successfully completed. Furthermore, any potential competitor attempting to use the same technology would almost unavoidably impinge on our patent rights and priority dates.
What does Reklaim do to protect the environment and community?
Our Boardman facility has a Standard Air Contaminant Discharge Permit from the State of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. We use a closed loop process that does not include any burning or combustion, so our emissions are negligible and we expect to remain well below overall emissions levels allowed by our permit.
Compared with the furnace method of producing carbon black, a single Reklaim plant operating at capacity would reduce greenhouse gas emissions the same as taking 2,250 cars off the road. Reklaim's oil products supplant conventionally recovered petroleum oil.
At community scale, besides creating high-quality green jobs, our facilities are good neighbors. They do not consume large tracts of land or require special zoning or environmental regulation. They are clean. There is no smoke, no effluent, and no excessive noise.
