Too Many Tires!
If environmental menaces were judged by the numbers, scrap tires would be at the top of the heap. It has been estimated that billions of tires languish in U.S. landfills, stockpiles and illegal dumps, and although this number has diminished in recent years, it is still a monumental problem.
300 million additional tires are discarded each year. To put this in perspective, this equates to a newly discarded tire for every man, woman and child in the United States – every year. Today’s radial tires last twice as long as the old bias ply tires made 20 years ago. Built to endure an average life of 40,000 miles, these tires take centuries to decompose naturally.
Identifying an environmentally friendly solution to discard 300 million tires a year is no simple task. The result to date has been illegal dumping, super-fund sites, and simply burning scrap tires.
